This is only using pure DPS numbers. When taking defense into account, damage is better than crit because damage bonuses apply before defense and crit applies after. For example, 100 damage against an enemy with 200 defense only deals 1 damage since 100 base damage - (0.5 x 200 defense) = 0, but minimum damage is 1. Occasionally in the console version, reforging an item many times quickly will give the player a modifier with false stats (e.g. 'Godly'( +60% damage, +25% knockback ) ). These supposed stat increases do not actually increase the attributes of your weapons/tools in this way, which can often times trick players into keeping modifiers they do not.
